Richard (Ric) Upton

As Executive Vice President, Healthcare Informatics and Strategic Development, Richard (Ric) Upton focuses on leveraging BBN’s innovation engine and portfolio of world-class technologies to solve critical problems at the intersection of healthcare and IT.

Prior to joining BBN, Dr. Upton was Vice-President, Strategic Development at ALPHATECH, Inc. where he helped to drive the growth of this high technology firm from $25M to over $100M in a period of four and a half years. ALPHATECH’s growth ultimately led to its successful acquisition by BAE Systems. During his tenure, he was responsible for defining and executing the Company’s strategy for moving from a technology-centric business to a systems and solutions business, and shaped the evolution of ALPHATECH’s organization to adapt to its growth and new market focus. As part of BAE Systems, Ric was responsible for all business development and strategy for a BAE Systems North America line of business as Vice President, Business Development, National Security Solutions.

Ric earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, and obtained an M.S.E. and B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. He is on the Board of Advisors for the Computer Science Department, University of Maryland, and the Board of Directors for two start-up firms focusing on security, privacy, and identity management.
