BBN Technologies Selected as Part of Boeing-Led Industry Team Awarded $54.6 Million U.S. Air Force Contract
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 15, 2004 — BBN Technologies, a worldwide leader in advanced networking technologies, announced today that it is part of a seven-member Boeing-led team awarded a $54M contract, one of two 15-month contracts awarded by the U.S. Air Force to develop system architectures and initial designs for the next iteration of Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) software-defined radios.
Under this contract award, BBN Technologies will define the intelligent networking protocols to be used in the Airborne network. The wireless networking protocols will allow maritime and airborne forces to communicate in an efficient, seamless and secure environment. Once operational, the AMF JTRS radios will be integrated into more than 150 types of airborne, shipboard and fixed station platforms.
"BBN is charged with defining the Airborne network protocols for an intelligent and secure network that will allow tens of thousands of different and often incompatible military radios to speak directly and securely with each other," said Duncan Miller, vice president, Mobile Networking Systems, BBN Technologies. "This will enable significantly better communication and enhance force protection and effectiveness."
BBN Technologies brings over 30 years experience in networking technologies to the team -- from the development of the very first Internet router to packet-satellite and radio communications to the first multi-gigabit router. Recently, BBN teamed with Boeing to develop networking software for the first procurement of JTRS radios for the U.S. Army.
The AMF/JTRS team also includes: Rockwell Collins' Government Systems division, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Harris Corporation's RF Communications Division, Rochester, New York; L-3 Communications' East, West, and Integrated Systems divisions, Camden, New Jersey, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Greenville Texas; Northrop Grumman Mission Systems sector, Reston, Virginia; and MILCOM Systems Corporation, Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The Airborne, Maritime/Fixed Station (AMF) JTRS program is under joint U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy oversight and led by the Air Force's Electronic Systems Center at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, Massachusetts.
